Kathy Verbeek
Kingston / Toronto based ceramicist, trained and specialized in Raku and Barrelled Smoke Firing techniques. Kathy started her career in ceramics with an adult pottery class in Northern Alberta. She studied at the Haliburton School of the Arts for both Raku and Blacksmithing and is currently an active member of the Hill Potters’ Guild in Richmond Hill. Her breakthrough came during a mentorship with Lesley McInally for Fusion Creative Direction. There, she explored larger built vessels and surface decorations, including the use of slips, underglazes, and monoprinting. Recently, Kathy has furthered her expertise by training with other well known Canadian based artists such as Angelo Di Petta and Loren Kaplan. Working with these artists has led to enhancing her skills for printing on clay and building even larger pieces with more detailed carvings. Her work showcases an array of beautifully layered textures, colours, and graffiti. These elements highlight the expression of wild, urban decay that is unique to Kathy Verbeek’s signature style.
